Your Teeth VS Halloween Candy

In Children, Dentistry, General Dentistry, Teeth Whitening

We are getting close to the spookiest time of the year!

As you get ready for a safe and fun Halloween, it is important to remember to take your dental health into consideration. Everyone knows that candy consumption hits a high point during the Halloween month. Let’s take a look at what that can do to your teeth.

Candy is, of course, full of sugar. You have probably heard that eating too much sugary food will cause tooth decay. But the sugar itself is not what is harmful. The bacteria in your mouth consume this sugar and produce acids as a by-product. These acids are what actually damage your teeth and cause cavities. Cavities are actually a bacterial infection that is created by those acids. When you develop a cavity, a hole in your tooth forms—which worsens over time if it’s left untreated. Now that’s scary!

Some candies are worse for your dental health than others. Sticky candy can get caught between teeth and can become difficult to wash or brush away. Sour candies are very acidic, and can contribute to tooth enamel decay.

So how can you enjoy your candy while also maintaining healthy teeth? Here are a few suggestions:
1. Enjoy your Halloween candy in moderation, don’t eat too much at once
2. Brush your teeth 2-3 times per day, ideally shortly after eating candy
3. Drink plenty of water after eating candy
4. Get regular dental check-ups
